Meet Jane Ramsey
Jane Ramsey is an Australian contemporary artist based in Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast.
Working primarily in oil, she creates large-scale abstract paintings inspired by the tangled beauty of overgrown gardens, wild natural spaces, and the emotional rhythms of everyday life.
Nurtured by a childhood rich in creative exploration, Ramsey discovered her love of painting when she first picked up oils in high school. She went on to study at the Brisbane Institute of Art before completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Queensland University of Technology in 2011.
Her early practice focused on intricate pen drawings and figurative work before evolving into abstraction, where a more intuitive and instinctive approach to painting emerged.
Beginning with energetic mark-making and layered colour, Ramsey allows each painting to unfold intuitively. Flowers and natural forms often provide a starting point, but the work quickly moves beyond direct reference as each composition develops through response, instinct and discovery.
Her paintings explore growth, change, and the contradictions of everyday life. Through abstraction, she reflects on the tension between control and surrender, creating works that hold both chaos and calm, wildness and tenderness. Energetic yet contemplative, her paintings invite reflection on the beauty that can be found in uncertainty, imperfection, and becoming.
